The Best Soft and Chewy Halloween Sugar Cookies

With Halloween in the air, I just had to take a cake break and make up a batch of awesome sugar cookies. These aren’t just any sugar cookies though, they are the BEST sugar cookies!
We had a little bakery where I grew up that had these cookies. They were amazing. Soft and chewy, but still with a little bite to them. Every holiday they would be iced in fun shapes or have a colored sugar dust. Of course, you had to get one of each if you are like me and can’t make a decision if your life depended on it. ( or if, also like me, you just love some cookies).
I’ve been working on the perfect sugar cookie recipe for a while now and by George, I think I have it. Even if it’s not exactly the same as the ones I had as a kid they are still pretty darn good.
Bakery Style Sugar Cookies
I just can’t get enough Halloween snacks. I think I am just hungrier this time of year. Maybe I’m happier since it’s my favorite time of year ( and almost my birthday!) Maybe I’m getting ready to hibernate. Either way, these cookies are a must-have snack for me when Halloween comes around (or, you know for a few months in the pre-Halloween excitement!)
Why Do I Use Turbinado Sugar?
Personally, I prefer to use Turbinado sugar because it is less processed than white sugar. I have found that I can use it in nearly every recipe that calls for white sugar. The only issue I have found is that it can alter the color of things slightly due to the color of the sugar itself.
Because it is less processed than white sugar, many believe turbinado to be lower in calories. In addition, during the processing that turbinado does go through it is not crushed to void it of all liquids. Rather, the liquid evaporates slowly leaving behind higher vitamin and mineral content.
There are other sugar substitutes out there that are less harmful than white sugar. However, some have issues that make them unhealthy and others just plain don’t match my palette. In a pinch, you can always use a liquid sugar substitute such as Agave or honey, but this will alter the consistency of the cookies.
Interestingly, turbinado sugar gets its name from the turbines used in processing. It gets its darker color from the molasses created naturally in the processing that it does go through.
