Life as a special needs mom can be stressful, to say the least. Whether we are busy running to appointments or handling a meltdown it seems like our job is never done. Far too often we forget to take time for ourselves. We are so busy making sure that our kids are happy and healthy that we forget to keep ourselves happy.
The urge to care for your kids and ignore everything about yourself is a very real one for many moms. On three occasions ignoring my own stress levels has ended with me in a mental hospital. On many other occasions, I found myself stuck in bed and no help to anyone as I was in the midst of a fibromyalgia flare.
As a mom with a mental illness and a special needs mom, I have learned to notice when stress is getting to be too much. However, I don’t always take the time I need to handle that stress. It is times like these that it can begin to take its toll.
By taking time to practice self-care and learning a few simple self-care tips you can reduce the effects of stress and anxiety. By doing so you will help to be a better mom and a happier person.
Why self-care is important for moms
By learning to care for yourself and learning self-care practices you are not only becoming a better mom. You are also becoming a better role model and example for your children. Teaching through the example to not strive for perfection but rather be ok with just being present is one of the best things you can do for them.
When we learn how to practice self-care we can begin to reduce stress levels that can lead to irritability and distractibility. This, in turn, helps to be more present in our everyday lives. Ignoring the importance of self-care can lead to out of control stress and anxiety. The effects of this stress and anxiety can keep us from being the best mom that we can be.
Ignoring our own needs to focus only on our kids can become a slippery slope. If we let one thing go today we can let two or three go tomorrow, and so on. It can become a feedback loop to toss our own needs aside to see the joy in our children. The more we give the happier they seem. This model can only sustain itself for so long though before it comes crashing down.
When we begin to understand the importance of reducing stress and get into a good self-care routine we can see how much happier both mom and kids are in the end. By learning a self-care strategy you can lower stress and actually be the mom you are trying to be.
In the end, it will matter far more to your kids that you were present than whether or not you were perfect.
How to practice self-care
The definition of self-care is any activity that we do to take care of our mental, emotional, or physical health. These are deliberate actions meant to care for yourself.
Self-care is a stress reduction technique that focuses on small changes we can make to lower our anxiety, irritability, and even more serious things like depression.
A few great self-care examples include:
* taking time for meditation
* reading a good book
* listening to your favorite music
* taking a spa day
These can be things that take a few minutes or last a full day. By getting into a good self-care routine you can work your way to a healthy mind and body in no time.
Mindfulness and meditation are one of the best ways to practice self-care. They help you to understand your personal stressors and work through them as they happen. I use mindfulness frequently to deal with stress and anxiety that are inherent to me as a woman with bipolar disorder.
Pampering yourself can also be a great way of beginning to practice self-care. You could do a weekly face mask treatment or even create a full-blown spa day to take care of yourself. Going for a pedicure or even a massage can be a great way to practice self-care as well.
One of my favorite self-care ideas for moms is to create a sanctuary out of your bedroom. In this area, you set the rules. You can have your own reading nook or even a quiet place to listen to music. This can be a kid-free area that is just for you.
The best self-care routines are those that find a way for you to enjoy things that bring you joy without interruption, even if only briefly.
Benefits of self-care
Self-care is an important way of handling stress and anxiety in your life. It can also be a good way to make sure that your body is in optimal health and good working order.
Moms with chronic illness can practice self-care as a way to battle flares or keep them at bay. A great example of this is a soak in an Epsom salt bath or by using a bath bomb for a healing aromatherapy experience.
Our skin is the largest organ of the body but far too often moms forget to care for it as they should! How many times have you had itchy skin that made you miserable or unable to focus on the task at hand? Through self-care routines, you can keep uncomfortableness or blemishes at bay.
